Celebrations are being planned for when Brighton and Hove officially becomes a Fairtrade City next month.

Supergrass singer Gaz Coombes was one of thousands who successfully campaigned for the recognition, which will come into effect on October 15.

Caf owners, shops and supermarkets have all done their bit to ensure the city will be added to the list of about 60 other Fairtrade towns and cities around the UK.

To qualify, traders had to agree to sell at least two fair-trade products.

Employers, community groups and churches also had to start using the products.

There will be several events to celebrate the launch, including promotions in cafs and restaurants and a reception hosted by Brighton and Hove Mayor Pat Drake. A spokesman for the Brighton and Hove Fairtrade Group said: "October 15 is a landmark day for Brighton and Hove as it finally becomes a Fairtrade City.

"This means years of work and co-operation between volunteers and Brighton and Hove City Council have been recognised by the Fairtrade Foundation.

"Everyone living and working in Brighton will be able to make a real and positive contribution to the lives of people in developing countries, just by making the right choice as they do their shopping or eat out."

The Brighton and Hove Fairtrade Group wants to hear from any schools, shops or cafs interested in being involved with the launch.
