Colin Tabb has left Brighton Bears on the eve of their first pre-season run out.
The shooting guard from Massachusetts had second thoughts about moving into the British League and will not be in action when Bears tackle Le Havre in Cherbourg tonight.
Coach Nick Nurse will bolster his six contracted players with trialists, including former London Towers guard Sammy Salter, who had a spell with Bears a few years ago.
Nurse has expressed his surprise at Steve Gayle's decision to turn down a Bears contract.
Gayle is returning to Worthing Thunder, having previously agreed terms with Bears.
Nurse said: "Steve Gayle called me to say he would not be playing this year due to family matters."
Gayle admitted: "I couldn't commit to Brighton but I've come to an agreement with (coach) Gary Smith at Worthing. I'm disappointed but relieved as well because I've got a chance to play this year."
