If Sheena Hogg thinks a petition of 150 signatures will bring about safety measures where a mere eight people have been killed (The Argus, September 13) she is due for a big disappointment.

On the A27 at Lancing, 11 people have been killed but a 30,000 name petition organised by the (then) local schoolgirl Laura Fauvel in 1998 which she delivered to No. 10 Downing Street still had no effect.

There was talk of a £400,000 bridge in 1997 and in July 2000 the go-ahead was given for a £1.6m bridge to be built. Then it was announced work would start on the (now) £3.6m bridge in April 2004.

Progress to date? Zilch.

There was announced an £11m immediate scheme to build a bridge on the A27 at Beddingham as the level crossing there "is an inconvenience to drivers". No deaths, just an inconvenience. The odd thing is, I travelled that stretch of road for five years and didn't know anything about an inconvenient level crossing. It was merely the equivalent of a set of traffic lights to me.

Maybe someone at County Hall will give positive information about progress with the Lancing bridge but hell will freeze over first.
