I have decided to go a little off topic this week, and with the budget announced for March 24, have a look at the political picture in my part of Brighton. It is likely Gordon Brown’s confidant Mr Mandelson might tell him the most advantageous time to announce the bloody battle of General Election is, May 6th ..... possibly. It is apparent; Messer’s Cameron and Brown will be paraded live on TV in a US style election debate scenario, with possibly David Dimbleby in middle with bow tie and dress shirt. So as to make these discussions truly memorable bouts. I expect Nick Clegg might be allowed to shout contradicting statements from the wings.
I don’t expect the Brighton Centre, The Dome, The Hanbury Ballrooms, or the old Co-op in London Road, will be selected as the venue for one of these epics. However, since our Pavilion MP Mr David Lepper, is standing down after 13 years of fairly decent service, we are to have a new kid on the block.
It is, unless of course some Independent or obscure, has other ideas, likely to be a lady.
The four runners are; Nancy Platts , Labour; Charlotte Vere,Conservative; Caroline Lucas , Green; and Berni Milam, Lib Dem.
As a constituent, I am concerned just how much our new MP may be able to connect with and be helpful towards your common or garden Brightonian. I have never been a fan of a political party thrusting their latest superstar in to the next available or vacant parliamentary seat. Whether it be a by -election or determined by resignation, retirement etc. Think back to, the Dr David Bull fiasco not to mention DVD. (David Van Day) Although I have always voted Tory (that’s what ex council estate boys do) I am not so sure this time.
I want see just how ‘Brighton’, our famous four are. So I have sent them all a Brighton Quiz.
