The spotlight will be put on the talent and achievement of young people in Whitehawk next Wednesday (March 17) during the Crew Club Showcase at the Brighton Centre. Kevin Grist, Music and Arts Development Worker at the Crew Club on Coolham Drive, Whitehawk, said: “This is the 10th anniversary of the club and the showcase is a great opportunity to highlight how it has improved the lives of young people in the area.”
When I visited the club last night (March 11) two young rappers, Tom Sissons and Nyah Bishop, were putting the final touches to a rap they will perform at the Showcase. Tom Sissons said: “The facilities at the Crew Club are great and they have definitely helped improve my rapping. My style is a mix of hip-hop, electronic and dub-step.”
Brighton-based writer and broadcaster Simon Fanshawe will attend the showcase which will feature a variety of performances and certificate presentations.
The Crew Club was founded by Lorraine and Darren Snow with the aim of providing a safe place for youngsters to take part in sport and other activities. It has gone from strength to strength and now offers and state-of-the-art music studio, music tuition and a band workshop. The club runs the ‘Resonate’ programme, supported by the BRIT Trust, which gives local youngsters the opportunity to take part in musical activity, accreditation and performance.
The club is also home to the Brighton & Hove Albion Kickz project which offers young people in the area the chance to play sport and develop their skills.
