With only 118 days to go thought it is time to research England's passage to the World Cup Final on 11th July 2010. Follow's is how travelling England supporters could spend 4 weeks of their 2010 annual leave as they move up and down this vast country. (Route is assuming England win group C.)
Match 5 England v USA 12th June 8.30pm in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium (cap 42,000) Rustenburg. 120km drive north of Johannesburg with evening temperatures getting down to a chilly 8oc.
Match 23 England v Algeria 18th June 8.30pm in the Green Point Stadium (cap 70,000) Cape Town.
Fans will have time to make the 1,400km car journey to the famous south coast city and enjoy a wealth of tourist attractions.
Match 37 England v Slovenia 23rd June 4.00pm in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (cap 48,000) Port Elizabeth Tricky 750km journey east along the coast road.
Match 50 England v ? (round of sixteen) 26th June 8.30pm Rustenburg.
Very long journey of 1,400kms back up north.
Match 55 England v ? (Quarter final) 2nd July in the Soccer City Stadium (cap 94,700) Johannesburg .
Short 120km drive south to South Africa's largest and most bustling city. Fans will be treated to the brand new Soccer City Stadium which should be packed to the rafters. England will be dreaming of returning here for the final.
Match 61 England v ? (Semi final) 8.30pm 6th July Cape Town Another long 1,300km trip down south. Mind you, if England get this far exhausted fans will be living on adrenalin and excitment.
Match 64 England v ? Final 8.30pm 11th July Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg.
Another exacting 1,300km drive back up the freeway, but who cares we are in the final.
That's 7 matches in 30 days and 6,300km to be travelled all in the South African winter.
Trust me, there will be a number of England fans (possible over a thousand) who will have made provisions to follow this punishing itinerary from start to finish. If England reach the final these people are in for a hell of a ride and it will truly be the experience of a life time. (Please contact me if you are one of these people on bowmansgang@aol.com)
My own preparations have had a positive turn this week. You will recall that I am desperate to go but had no tickets or funds . Well, owing to some good fortune with the latest official Ticket sales phase it seems as though there are some seats available for me to see England in matches 50 and 55. Will have to scrap the semi final and final idea and will now look to travel on 24th June watch England on 26th June and 2nd July and travel back on 3rd July. It is a huge breakthrough and makes my dream a little closer to reality. I have even booked my annual leave.
Still need to get my hands on £2000 to pay for it all.
Please watch out for the next article where England 1970s World Cup hopes came crashing down.
