Call it a school boy error, but I found myself double booked on Tuesday night.
Of course I should have been at The Withdean Stadium the current home of Brighton and Hove Albion.
However instead, I was in the South Balcony of the Brighton Centre, watching a popular music ensemble called JLS.
As a precaution against actually hearing the X-Factor losers, I took my walkman radio with me, so I could enjoy the exciting action from the Albion.
At about 8.15 I noticed a lot of young mothers from the various Brighton ‘burbs’ were becoming very excitable as were their daughters. I thought that like me they also had their portable radios and were aware, again like me, that Chris Holroyd and Liam Dickinson appeared to, be running Huddersfield ragged. But no, our boy band entertainers had taken to the stage. It was quite late, I thought most of them should have been in bed, if not asleep, at least reading. Though I was quite far away. A bit like being in the away end at the Withers.
JLS apparently stand’s for ‘Jack the Lad Swing’, though I don’t think this has any connection to that chap who laughs at his own jokes on Southern Sound.
They have two songs which appear to be related to the Albion, Beaten Again and Everybody in Hove.
The music is quite loud, and a steward advised it was unlikely they would turn it down, so I might be able to hear the match.
However I was able to ‘enjoy’ the commentary provided er... Gavin Dennerson and former Albion legend John Byrne.
Gavin was standing in for Jonny Cantor, the regular commentator. Young Gav usually does Aldershot or Lewes or similar. He does describe the action quite well, but also has this tendency to pause for thought and very occasionally says the complete opposite of what he intended. They are quite a lot of ‘er’s’ in Gavin’s commentary, you are never sure if he is referring to a Channel Four medical drama or the Queen.
JLS had gone off for their cookies and milk, or whatever they consume at half time, or is it an intermission? I heard them on Southern Sound the next day(Wednesday morning), being interviewed by an excitable 30 something women. Now JLS are primary school age yes? A modern day Musical Youth perhaps?
Back at the match the Albion were well in to the second half, and Mr D advised me, or us, I suppose, that Holroyd and now Murray were still running the show. He also told us, the best way to get to the Recreation Ground and that his local launderette doesn’t take five pence pieces. There might have been some interference from Radio Reverb at this stage .
In the end of course the Albion only drew, although many thought they should have won.
JLS sang then another song that I thought was to intentionally goad the Albion, this time their currently number six in the hit parade, ‘One Shot’.
Did I really go to see JLS? As Harry Hill might say ‘‘not really of course, the power of suggestion’’ But then again is a red blooded, slightly mature, yet uber trendy Brightonian male, going to admit to going to such a gig?
If you know one, ask him.
