Police said the driver did not stay at the scene or leave any details.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: "The cyclist, a 33 year old local man, received serious injuries and was taken to hospital."
Anyone who saw what happened or can identify the car and its driver is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999, quoting serial 967 of January 10.
