Sussex Police spent almost £1.5 million on hire cars over the last five years, figures released by the force reveal.
The revelation comes as the cash-strapped force tries to save money.
Sussex Police Authority has predicted a 14% fall in funding for the force between April 2010 and April 2014, meaning £35 million of cuts must be made to fill the gap.
Forces in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland spent £132 million on rental cars in the last five years. That averages out at more than £70,000 a day.
Officials in Sussex are now looking at ways of cutting the amount the force spends on the vehicles.
Dr Laurie Bush, the chairman of Sussex Police Authority, said the cost of hire cars was an area that was being targeted to save money.
