Shoppers are being warned about the quality of cheap brands of bacon.
A team from Brighton and Hove City Council's Trading Standards department collected 12 packs of bacon from supermarkets across the city, which were sent for analysis, to compare value, own brand and premium products.
Unsurprisingly, the meat content of premium brands was found to be much higher than that of the value and standard products.
But the amount of water in the cheapest brands was found to be higher than advertised.
In one value product, the amount of meat was less than that declared on the label and it was made up of 16% added water, which should have been declared on the label but was not.
Trading Standards said officers would be following up their findings with the bacon's manufacturers.
Some of the value and standard products also contained higher levels of salt than the premium brands, while the analysis discovered that, on average, just two rashers of bacon amounted to more than 50% of an adult's recommended daily intake of salt.
