I do not wish to add insult to injury over the whole weather fiasco and the current administration’s inadequate measures to make the streets safe for us to move about, but I feel it appropriate to point out how their response demonstrated, perhaps more clearly than at any other time during their term of office, how car-centric their collective mindset is.
There is no denying this has been an especially severe snowfall with relentlessly low temperatures, but it did not come out of the blue.
Where were the plans of action to prepare not only the road surfaces but also the pavements and other walkways before the snow fell?
City councillor Geoffrey Theobald said it was difficult to justify using the budget on extra resources “in preparation for something that happened so rarely” (The Argus, December 22).
I would respectfully ask Coun Theobald and the Tory administration to reflect on whether they did have the ordinary walking resident in mind when they executed their response or whether, by habit, they automatically planned around the car user?
