The icy pavements in Brighton after last week’s snowfall are a case of absolute neglect.
The snow fell on Friday but it was not until Tuesday that we saw a council employee gritting – after the snow had begun to melt.
I live in Clifton Road, at the heart of an area of steep hills. I have a toddler and because of the thick ice on pavements and roads was more or less trapped at home. It was simply too dangerous to venture out with him.
Not only were the pavements death traps but over the three days since the snow fell on Friday, my family witnessed many traffic accidents as cars skidded on to pavements and into other cars.
In Clifton Road, a car was stuck halfway on the pavement for two days, and Clifton Hill was blocked for part of Sunday afternoon after a car skidded sideways into other parked cars.
We saw numerous people falling over or walking on the roads to avoid ice. This is just a snapshot of two streets.
I ventured out finally on Sunday evening and soon slipped on the ice, badly spraining my wrist. I am now wearing a splint and am unable to care for my child without help.
We have visitors from Germany and they are amazed at the uselessness and incompetance of the British. The council is at best incompetant and at worst negligent.
