A teacher has stepped up a campaign to improve safety on a busy road after several children were hit by cars in the spot where a young boy died.

James Mannion, a personal social health education (PSHE) teacher from Portslade Community College will send letters to Brighton and Hove City Council written by concerned children from the school about the safety of Chalky Road, Portslade.

The road was where nine-year-old Henry Nugent was killed last year after being hit by a car.

Since his death three other children have also been injured on the road.

Mr Mannion said: “The fact is children are nearly getting hit every day on Chalky Road and this is all happening on our doorstep.

“People do drive aggressively and there needs to be a crossing for children to cross safely.”

Jessica Haines, 13, was hit by a car last month after crossing the road on the way home from Portslade Community College.

Jessica suffered cuts and bruises after rolling over the bonnet of a car.

Bailey Hill, 11, was also hit by a car on the road in July as he walked to Mile Oak Primary School and Kirsty-Jane Farrant, 13, was injured in May while walking home with a friend.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “Proposals are being drawn up to enhance existing traffic calming measures, including measures to reduce the speed of vehicles approaching Chalky Road. Final plans will then have to be approved by the cabinet early next year.”
