My 80-year-old mother was shopping in London Road with my 82-year-old father and had just been to the bank to take out £100 for Christmas shopping.
Like a lot of pensioners they saved all year to buy presents. This year they celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary on Boxing Day but, thanks to a pickpocket who struck in the Help the Aged shop, their Christmas will be very different to the one they planned.
Apart from the money, my mum has shed more tears over sentimental possessions. Having lost their only son, my brother, 15 years ago on December 14, she treasured the photo of him she carried with her at all times.
Most mothers will identify with the small tokens of our families we carry with us which is why stealing someone’s purse is such a nasty, heartless crime.
If you have an elderly parent or friend, insist they carry their bags underneath their coats when in the London Road area. I wouldn’t like others to be left heartbroken.
