A major campaign is being launched today to highlight the impact binge drinking has on the community.

Health bosses are publishing their manifesto on tackling the health and social problems caused by alcohol just as the Christmas and New Year celebrations get into gear.

It was drawn up following the Big Drink Debate carried out earlier this year when thousands of residents and professionals across Sussex, Surrey and Kent were asked for their views and concerns.

The manifesto highlights the need to support the police in tackling alcohol related crime and antisocial behaviour, explore whether minimum prices and restrictions on cheap alcohol sales should be introduced and tackle family breakdown and domestic abuse linked to alcohol.

Brighton and Hove, Eastbourne, Hastings and Worthing have some of the highest drink-related hospital admission rates in the South East.

In Brighton and Hove the figure is 1,708 per 100,000 of the population, in Eastbourne it is 1,874 and in Worthing 1,561.

The national average is 1,582.

People can comment on the manifesto until the end of January and health bosses when then use the results to decide how to develop long-term plans to tackle binge-drinking.
