IT WAS an interesting history lesson on Britain’s railways by Richard Szypulski (The Argus, December 9), but his anti- renationalisation views don’t explain why privatisation has been a disaster for rail passengers and the taxpayer.

Mr Szypulski states that before the Second World War the railways were in private hands. I wouldn’t remember but I can remember the older generation saying rail travel in that period of time was only for the the wealthy.

As someone who was a regular rail user for many years under both state and private ownership, I can’t afford to travel by train now. It seems to have gone full circle.
