Peter Lilley is right to say actions speak louder than words when it comes to taking measures to combat climate change.
This is why the Labour, Green and Lib Dem groups on the council worked together on this issue to give the city a set of environmentally sustainable policies, particularly in respect to transport.
The city now has a clear basis for a co-ordinated transport policy to be developed and implemented, with these key principles enshrined in its core strategy framework.
It is certainly not good enough for the Conservative administration to sign up to campaigns such as the 10:10 Campaign, that seeks to cut council carbon emissions by ten percent in 2010, but not vote through the city-wide policies needed.
Mere lip service and slogans will not make a difference.
Last Thursday was a good day for democracy, with the Conservatives belatedly realising that they do not have a majority mandate to run this city and that they should stop behaving as if they have.
Councillor Gill Mitchell, leader of the Labour Group, Brighton and Hove City Council
