HARDLY a day goes by that The Argus doesn’t report cases of violence happening in or around so-called “nightclubs”. These cases occur right across Sussex.
In the 1960s I belonged to several nightclubs. In those days the clubs were places where men could take their women friends for a safe evening’s entertainment in elegant surroundings.
Trouble was virtually unknown. To be admitted you had to be a member or be accompanied by a member. Strict codes of dress and behaviour were enforced.
Nowadays just about anyone is admitted and they are permitted to drink to excess. You seem to be able to open a club just about anywhere and nearby residents have to endure drunks vomiting and urinating in the middle of the night. The worst thing is that this lowering of standards has been accepted by local councils and the police.
