Gus Poyet the Gus Poyet is the Albion’s new manager.
Formerly of Tottenham, Chelsea, Real Zaragoza, and of course a distinguished international career with Uruguay.
He must have a cracking interview technique, by my reckoning Bloom’s still got 3 applicants to see.
Gus and his glamorous assistant Mauricio Taricco took training for the first time on Thursday and sought the advice of Charlie Oatway. You couldn’t make it up could you?
It has taken Brighton and Hove by storm.Everyone is trying to work out whether its Poy-eh or Poy-et. You see you pronounce Moet Mo-wett because they ‘re Dutch the Moet’s. Obviously Gus is South American so I’ll plump for Poy-eh. They were discussing in it in my barbers/ gents stylist/coiffure/ this is Brighton, delete as appropriate.
Dave who co-owns Trafalgar’s was impressed by Gus’s appointment. He noted we were news in all the big papers, just like we were in the 80’s. His colleagues Rob and Rich thought the same.
Robbo and Ritchie now those were the days.
The profile of the club has taken a massive upward turn since Tuesday. Not now a footballing backwater like it was it the late 90’s. But like the upcoming, fashionable, almost sexy team it was in the early 80’s.
It is suggested even though Gus lives in plush commuter belt Kent, he is keen to set up base in Brighton. I hear Peter Andre has bought a new Fond Du set just in case.
It couldn’t be a more high profile start for the new management team with the match live on Sky against Southampton.
I see it is being pitched by the broadcaster as a south coast derby. It’s hardly that.
We didn’t play them competitively from 1986 to that fateful day in 2001.
We did play them in another guise in 1898 we lost 4-1 as Brighton United so that probably isn't a strong line of form to follow.
To my memory we have never been very successful against the Saints. I do vaguely recall a win at the Dell one evening during the early 1981/82 season.
I am full of nervous anticipation about Gus and Mauricio’s first few games in charge. They have a blank canvas and a superb squad to tinker with.
All of a sudden following the Albion is exciting again and maybe this time for all the right reasons.
