SO PLANS are to be submitted to build a new Asda store at Newhaven.
This is not want the people of the town want. We have two very good supermarkets already.
The town has already been hit by consent to build an incinerator no one wanted so let the people have their say on this decision and not the planners.
A new superstore would put pressure on Somerfield. What is more important for Newhaven is to get the town up and working again and not resembling a ghost town.
Tradesmen come and go all the time as businesses fail to prove viable. All the town has are charity shops and takeaways.
We have to consider the young people of the town who are bored with nothing to do. What is needed is a cinema, bowling alley and the post office brought down to the old Woolworths for convenience for the elderly.
Vast profits made by supermarkets would not benefit the town. A plan for more housing will only create gridlock due to more cars and parking.
With the closure of Parker Pen and the loss of building societies, hardware shops, and Woolworths, many more seem set to follow soon.
The shops that stand empty make no income for the town so there would be no point in a new Asda. I hope the people will not support this plan.
