A suspected arson attack on a bank led to residents being evacuated from neighbouring flats.
Police are appealing for witnesses after a blaze started underneath air-conditioning units behind the NatWest Bank in Peacehaven.
Residents of flats next to and above the premises on South Coast Road, Peacehaven, were evacuated after the incident late on Thursday night.
Two people were treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics.
The bank, which was open yesterday, was not damaged structurally in the blaze.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said they were keeping an “open mind” about the bank fire but wanted to speak with two men seen in the area at about 11.30pm.
Inspector Adam Hays of Lewes District Police said: "At this stage we are keeping an open mind as to motive and cause.
“It has not yet been conclusively confirmed that this was deliberate ignition but we are very keen to speak with two people seen in the area.”
The two men, aged between 16 and 18, were of slim build and between 5’10 and 6’1.
One was wearing a white t-shirt and jeans and the other was described as wearing a dark t-shirt and jeans.
Insp Hays added: "At present we are treating this as an isolated incident but we will be increasing our patrols in the area and providing a more visible presence in Peacehaven over the weekend.”
Anyone with any information should contact Newhaven CID quoting incident number 1920 of 3 September, or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
