Robert Evans wrote that the Lewes to Uckfield railway line was “closed to allow the Phoenix Causeway development in Lewes in 1970, thus enabling the conversion of the Cuilfail tunnel from a rail freight tunnel to a road tunnel” (Letters, September 2).

It never was a rail tunnel. I lived in Lewes at the time and saw the tunnel driven through solid chalk where no tunnel had been before.

It was opened to pedestrians for one day only, on November 30, 1980, and has been a road tunnel ever since.
