The changes in a week....
It's amazing just what can change in the space of seven days. Just a week ago we were preparing to travel to Wiltshire and then welcome winless Ebbsfleet to the Lane. Since our visit to Salisbury and the points we threw away, the Whites have not only lost the one point gained with a last-gasp equaliser, but a further nine points as they enter administration. The club was put up for sale back in April for just £1 and one can only assume that no-one came forward with a golden coin.
With Chester sitting rock bottom of BSP following their deduction, it would seem that Salisbury will slip down to a zero points tally, and in theory this could now mean only two relegation spots to be avoided. Can our West Country rivals claw it all back and stay in this league.. only time will tell.
One interesting fact that emerged during our visit last Saturday was that Salisbury have in attendence 30 matchday stewards, each being paid £20 for their troubles. That's £600 per game! At the Lane, volunteers turn up, don glowing jackets and do it for free. I guess that just the Eastbourne Borough ethos!
To Monday, and with the sun blazing, the Eurostar Express was in town. Our near neighbours from Kent, MyFC, arrived without a win this season, so home hopes were high for all 3three points following the disappointment of Saturday.
It was good to see the crowd get over the 1,000 mark again. With the "Kids go Free" vouchers, we hoped to convert some new visitors to come, watch and come again! We have a reputation as a friendly club, and that reflected in the final score. We gave Ebbsfleet their first victory.
Now, I am not one to dwell too long on what could have or should have been, BUT it should have been three more points for Borough, and not the other way round. After the referee allowed Danny Knowles to leave the pitch and catch up on his sunbathing, the hearts of the Priory Lane faithful sank. Michael Jordan soon got his first feel for the match ball, as is often the case, when he picked it out the net following thatpenalty!
Ten men against 11 in the burning sun soon took its toll. The lads did battle hard, and when Jamie netted, hope sprung eternal, but for the third time in as many games the little white globe found the back of our net in the dying seconds. I have written a letter to FIFA demanding that all games last no more than 88 minutes in future. As yet, Mr Blatter has not replied!
And so to the final change of the week. After six years, Alan Hodges has relinquished the role of the Chairman of the EBFC Supporters Club. Since I became involved at the Boro, I know just what hard work all the Supporters Club Committee put in behind the scenes. As the chairman, Alan has actively been at the forefront of its progress, and he leaves it in a very good state of health. We wish Alan and his wife, Vanessa, all the very best in their plans, but I have a sneaking suspcion Mr Hodges will still be haunting the Lane for a while yet.
So its onwards, and hopefully, upwards. Back on the road for two in a row. Aggborough, The Harriers, and delicious Cottage Pies await us on Saturday, followed by a trip to what has so far been a very happy hunting ground for "The Sports" in the guise of Broadhall Way, Stevenage. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the only under passing we see there is the one from the car park to the stadium!
Seven days IS a long time in football.... Let's hope the next seven work in our favour!
