Only a short post from me this week as it’ll be a short weekend. Don’t fret though, it’s not because I have to work over half the weekend, it’s because I will be flying out to sunnier climes and having a holiday in Croatia – woo hoo!
But I will be around for the obligatory celebration that it is Friday night and for this I plan to visit to one of my favourite local pubs in Hove, the Neptune.
It’s been a while since I have been there on a Friday night. The Neptune is a great ‘day pub.’ As you go in, the locals are happy to talk to you (not stare until you abandon your drink and leave) but it is also on where you can keep yourself to yourself if you so wish. It’s also a pub where as you walk in everyone knows everyone and their dog. I remember the cosy feeling when I went in one day and the barman already knew my order.
But at the weekend the pub is transformed with many people crammed into the joint to see the live music. What draws me to these nights is not seeing the latest band playing or there is anything cool about it. No quite the opposite, it is so ‘old man’ and unpretentious that it’s great. The music is always really good with great foot stomping blues. I’m not particularly into blues but I have never seen an act there that I didn’t like and it makes a refreshing change for a jolly night out.
The only gripe I have about the place is the size of the wines glasses – even when you ask for a large, it disapprovingly small, now what’s that about?! But with the minimal price they charge, I can’t really complain too much!
