I REFER to the article on fire doors at Swallow Court, Whitehawk, Brighton, (The Argus, August 24).
Judging from the photograph, the actual door does not seem to comply with the basic requirements of a fire rated door, in that the area of glass appears excessive.
Presumably it is opening in the direction of escape but the actual glazed screen in which the door is hung is not of a fire rated construction, as I understand the definition.
I have been out of this country, practising as an architectural technologist for many years, but during those years have been working with the updated building regulations in South Africa.
I was therefore horrified by the sight of the devastation caused by the recent fires at a block of flats in London and at the general standard of fire prevention.
Regretfully my copy of the building regulations has been lost in the move to England and therefore I am not able to let you have a copy of the relevant section.
