An elderly man was injured when he tried to tackle a chip pan fire at his Crawley home.

Firefighters were called to Choda House in Commonwealth Drive, Crawley, shortly before 7pm on Tuesday.

They said the man had tried to deal with the burning pan himself but dropped it on his leg.

Firefighters treated him for burns until paramedics arrived.

Gary Waters, of Crawley fire station, said: "If a chip pan does catch light our advice is to get out, shut the door on it and call the fire service."
