IT IS great news for Forces Sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn that she has re-entered the charts 70 years after her Second World War heyday with an album of her most popular songs (The Argus, August 31).
Dame Vera has become a record-breaker at the age of 92 by becoming the oldest living artist to appear in the top 20 album chart.
This, I think, is a great achievement and I am not surprised Dame Vera is thrilled to be top of the pops once again.
Her wartime songs were a great morale boost to the troops as she entertained them in India and Burma during her many outdoor concerts.
She also touched many people’s hearts back home. The songs were very uplifting and, more importantly, patriotic showing the great resolve of wartime Britain.
I am delighted the songs will be heard and enjoyed by another generation and I suspect many more to come. There’s no harm in being proud to be British.
