Hit-and-run death crash driver Jamie Filan left Britain for a holiday abroad because he “needed a break” after two and half years in jail.

Filan was jailed for a total of five years in 2007 after accidentally running over and killing dental nurse Michelle Dever in Lancing.

Last week The Argus revealed he was gloating to friends about a trip to hedonistic holiday island Ibiza on his Facebook page, causing distress to Miss Dever's family.

Now back in Britain, Filan faces being recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his early release but moaned that prison had been difficult on him and he had not understood the restrictions put on him when he came out.

Speaking exclusively to The Argus he said: “I had no idea it was against the rules.

“When I got out my mates said 'you need a break' and paid for me.

“I accept full responsibility that I shouldn't have been on that road.

“But I've served two and a half years.

“A lot of things happened in the time I was in prison. Me and my wife split up and my own mum died.

“If you put it in context I got a five year sentence and the Lockerbie bomber only got 10.

“I have never set out to hurt anyone.

“It's not like I went to Ibiza knowing full well it was against the rules of my supervision.

“I had no idea it would cause this much trouble.

“If I had known there was a chance I could be recalled to prison I would never have taken that risk.”

Filan, 28, used his page on the social networking site to boast about the fun he was having jetskiing, quadbiking and nightclubbing.

Yesterday he said that airline staff or customs officials at Gatwick airport should have stopped him leaving the country and even blamed The Argus for the distress his gloating caused Michelle's family.

He said: “I feel sorry for the family having it all brought back up and having The Argus contact them.”

Probation officers have been in touch with Filan since The Argus reported his Facebook page the Ministry of Justice.

He said: “At the end of the day I have been stupid and I have got to put my hands up for these things.

“Probation have spoken to me and I am in serious trouble with them.

“I might have to go back to jail for it.

“I have to speak to the probation service on Monday to find out what's going to happen.”

Michelle, 30, was hit by a blue Ford Fiesta driven by Filan as she crossed the road near her beachfront home in Brighton Road, Lancing, on February 2, 2006.

Filan, who did not have a driving licence or insurance, drove off and tried to cover up the crime by dumping the car at Beach Green, less than a mile away.

Probation Service officials said they could not comment on individual cases but were investigating whether Filan breached the conditions of his licence.

A spokeswoman said: “Offenders on licensed release from determinate sentences are permitted to leave the UK only in the most exceptional circumstances, and certainly not for holiday, leisure or business.

“They are subject to recall to custody if they breach their conditions or their behaviour indicates that it is no longer safe to allow them to remain in the community.”
