The Convalescent Police Seaside Home in Portland Road, Hove, was the first of its kind in Britain. Opened in 1893, it was largely financed by philanthropists such as the builder William Willett. It could house up to 60 men at one time and most of them came from London.

In the 1960s, the building became outdated and it was replaced by a new one in Kingsway, Hove, which opened in 1966. This in turn closed in 1988 and was converted into a hotel after refurbishment.

The convalescent home moved to Goring-on-Thames and was reopened by the Queen Mother, but many officers had fond memories of their stays by the sea.
