Have any Argus readers visited Ship Street in Brighton this summer?

I am writing as a thunderous noise deafens all those who dare to venture along the street only to be shrouded in building dust.

I am dismayed by Brighton and Hove City Council’s decision to carry out pavement widening during the entire summer holidays while there is a major recession. Thanks to this decision our takings are down by 40% on an average week, not even a holiday week. Has nobody at the council noticed the number of businesses that have closed in Ship Street already this year? I can count five.

The road closure, barriers, noise, drilling etc has caused a major drop in footfall from North Street and no doubt a few more businesses will close because of the ruined summer trading.

No doubt the council will complain that business rate receipts are down and housing benefit demands are up due to retail staff redundancies. It simply defies belief.
