REGARDING the front page headline “Sussex faces speed limit crackdown” (The Argus, August 17), this is done to reduce an “increase in road deaths” which are not all to do with speed but in many cases are down to bad driving.

Any death is tragic but please do not always blame them on speed.

When the law allows a new driver to go out and buy any car he wants regardless of driving experience then we are asking for trouble.

When there is a reduction in the number of traffic police and a reliance on cameras to catch speeders you are asking for trouble.

When a blanket coverage of reducing speeds is introduced you will be asking for trouble as the next step will be to introduce cameras to catch these “speeders” and not have traffic police patrolling the roads of Sussex. This will merely lead to the cloning of number plates and more drivers without insurance, MoTs or road tax.

The police are putting a new camera at Bolney to catch speeding drivers. Where are the unmarked police cars that are meant to patrol this stretch of road? There are enough signs to tell you they are there. It would be more productive to have marked police cars as they would be more of a deterrent.

I personally feel this is a way of generating revenue from speeding fines by the back door, using speeding as an excuse without tackling the main problem which is drivers’ lack of awareness and road skills.
