A teenager who smashed a bottle in a man’s face in an unprovoked street attack has been jailed for 15 months.

Sam Roser-Ward, 18, was banned by an antisocial behaviour order from being in Brighton city centre at the time he brutally assaulted the stranger.

He hit his victim with such force the bottle cut his mouth and chipped several teeth.

Roser-Ward, of Kenilworth Close, Brighton, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm and breaching the Asbo when he appeared at Lewes Crown Court.

Judge Richard Brown told him: “This type of assault in a public place is totally unacceptable.

“People are entitled to walk the streets of this country without being attacked by people like you.”

The court heard the victim was walking along Church Street on March 12 at about 10.45pm when he was approached by Roser-Ward, who was with a friend.

Dianne Gordon-Bassett, prosecuting, told the court the teenager said to his victim, “excuse me mate”, before swinging the bottle with considerable force into the man’s face.

Two people close by, one of whom was an off-duty police officer, gave chase as Roser-Ward ran off, leaving his victim bleeding and in pain.

Roser-Ward ran into William Collier House, a hostel close by where he was living at the time.

He was arrested soon afterwards.

The teenager has more than 15 convictions, including theft, assault, affray and being drunk and disorderly.

He was made the subject of an Asbo in November last year following repeated problems with his behaviour.

One of the conditions of the order was a ban on him going to certain streets in the city centre outside the hours of 9am to 11am.

He had previously breached the order six times since it was imposed.

In June, he was jailed for one of the breaches.

Siobhan Lawson, defending, said the teenager felt remorse.

She added: “He is sorry for his behaviour.”

Roser-Ward will serve his sentence at a young offenders’ institution.
