Steve Kennard needs to appreciate that bus services are deregulated and open to free competition, eg Stagecoach, Countryliner and Big Lemon also run buses which use Brighton’s bus lanes, as well as hundreds of privately owned taxis and private hire cars (Letters, August 22).

That’s why local authorities, with Government funding through the Local Transport Plan, finance such road improvements using taxes paid by motorists (as he says) but also significant tax contributions paid by private companies including Brighton & Hove Bus Company.

Buses also pay substantial road tax just like any other vehicle.

We would be quite prepared to consider funding the construction of exclusive lanes solely for my company’s buses but I suspect Mr Kennard would be the first to cry foul at that too.
