FLORA is a community group working to prevent development on the site of the old railway allotments on the bank opposite the booking hall at London Road Station. We have been collecting historical and ecological information from local people about the site and would like more recollections.
Do you remember the railway workers’ allotments at London Road Station? Did you know the people who worked them? Do you have any old photos of the station, or the gardens there, especially if you can date them?
Do you know anything about the station before, during or after the Second World War? Do you enjoy watching wildlife on the railway bank opposite the Brighton-bound platform, behind the Open House pub (formerly The Springfield)?
If so, Flora would love to hear your memories of this spot, imminently threatened with development, and any observations of birds, animals, insects and plants you have noticed there.
Flora maintains it should remain a green space for the sake of the wildlife and the enjoyment of many people.
If the development can be stopped, Flora is prepared to look into the possibility of buying the site through a community trust, to look after it as a small nature reserve.
