Had you come to this benefit in aid of the Sussex Beacon expecting a night to remember you may – or may not – have been disappointed.

This one-off show was as varied as it could possibly be in both range and quality.

Acts ranged from daredevil to equestrian, from camp to choral and from polished to painful.

A wooden skit by the Konyot Clowns, for example, was offset by smiling trapeze artist Disa Trapeze’s skilful swinging.

And a limp Strictly Come Dancing spoof was kicked off its perch by ringmaster Norman Barrett’s charming troupe of budgies.

Musically-speaking, the Brighton And Hove (Actually) Gay Men’s Chorus presented a brilliant version of The Rhythm Of Life and provided tuneful support for Samantha Howard’s operatic warblings.

The sheer spectacle of Tom Roberts’s four Palominos in full gallop was hard to beat, while, thrills-wise, high-wire act The Marinhas provided an adrenalin rush.

And last, but certainly not least judging by the audience’s reaction, was a starkers Robert James, who brought this quirky show to a cheeky conclusion with his song Perky Little Porn Star.
