It's safe to say you’ve “made it” when you announce a V Festival warm-up two days beforehand (without promotion) and tickets sell out in 20 minutes.

Once inside, it became apparent the spaceship-like curved ceiling and control panel lighting of Digital perfectly suited the sound of MGMT – a sound labelled “space rock”, with these guys firmly at the helm.

The band treated us to rich swathes of prog-pop before their hit single Time To Pretend roused everyone into motion. Electric Feel got a similar response while The Youth was another standout track.

But the most euphoric moment came courtesy of audience member Liam Carroll during an off-kilter version of Kids. He ended up on stage with a microphone, inciting collective jubilation before surfing away on a forest of outstretched hands. And how did it feel to get the best reaction of the night? “Whatever I sang, the crowd sang back. It was just great being onstage with them!”

So, a space-rock ’n’ roll moment for Liam, 20, from Hove, who mingled with the stars and may even have upstaged them. It could be some time before he comes back down to earth.
