The surprising feature of this view, taken in the Edwardian era, was how many trees there were in Victoria Gardens, Brighton. Many of them have since been lost due to disease and storms, but a number of fine elms remain.
The gardens, named after Queen Victoria, had a formal walkway which has long since disappeared. But the statue of her remains.
Until about 20 years ago, public access was forbidden to the gardens by Brighton Council and occasionally students at the College Of Art would be fined for taking a short cut.
