An elderly man was left fighting for his life after the second crash in four days on a road near Chichester.
The 76-year-old's Suzuki Liana car left the road and hit a tree on the A285 at Halnaker, near Chichester, shortly before 6pm on Wednesday.
Police described his injuries as life-threatening.
One dog which was in the car died and another was injured.
The man was taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester where his condition was described as stable.
The crash followed the death on Sunday of motorcyclist Colin McAllister.
The 39-year-old, of Dean Way, Storrington, was killed in a collision with a lorry.
