CLOSE: Somerset 126-0 (35)
The punters at Taunton today cannot complain about the entertainment. 542 runs have been scored - but only two wickets taken all day. Trescothick is 55 and Suppiah 67 as the bells of St James' Church peel to signify the end of a historical day. We're back tomorrow when I fully expect Trescothick to fill his boots just like Goodwin did. They are still 616 runs behind though.
Sussex 109-0 (26.3)
Arafat back for a second spell, hoping to get some reverse swing at the Old Pavilion end. Suppiah has got to his 50 from 68 balls with 10 fours and a straight six off Rayner which threatened us in the press box. Trescothick is playing within himself for 47 - looks like he's setting himself up to play a long innings tomorrow. Dwayne Smith into the attack now.
Somerset 50-0 (9.4)
Rayner on in the ninth over and straight away he has an appeal for lbw against Suppiah turned down, probably going over that one. Collymore bowling a good stump-to-stump line but Trescothick is feasting on the slightest smidgeon of width and has just crashed him through extra for four to go to 29 and bring up the 50. Suppiah 21. Somerset need 593 to avoid the follow on incidentally.
Somerset 8-0 (2)
Lovely four down the ground by Trescothick from Arafat's loosener and Suppiah has just edged Collymore past second slip for four. Sussex not over-attacking with only two slips in a packed offside field.
Sussex 742-5 dec
Sussex duly declared at tea amid a plethora of new records which you can read at http://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/argusgeneralsportsnews/4557289.Goodwin_sets_new_record/
Sussex 733-5 (161)
Goodwin pushes a single to long off and goes to 336 not out, the highest indivdual score in Sussex's history and breaking his own record set in 2003. He did show his mortality on 326 when he was dropped by Kieswetter but we'll forgive him that. Cannot imagine Sussex will continue after tea, as it stands Somerset would need 584 to avoid the follow on! Hodd is 17 incidentally.
WICKET: Sussex 680-5 (167)
Two wickets in an over for Suppiah. He ended that fourth wicket stand of 363 in 71 overs by bowling Hopkinson through the gate for 132 - that one turned a bit actually - and has now got Dwayne Smith third ball for four, Smith having belted his first ball over mid-wicket to the boundary. Goodwin still on 300, Andy Hodd with him now.
Sussex 660-3 (162)
Cheer from the fraggles in the stand as Goodwin takes a single off Waller to take the stand to 327 and a new fourth wicket Sussex record. Goodwin is eight short of his triple hundred and has now scored more runs in this innings than his previous 19 this season. I'm sure there will be a few more records before Sussex have had enough. This is also the fourth highest total in their history and they are scoring so quickly that they could threaten 700 before they are finished. One of those "I was there" days for the Sussex contingent here.
Sussex 619-3 (158.2)
Goodwin to 250, the last 50 having come off 34 deliveries. So far he's hit three sixes and 34 fours. Hopkinson is 126 which has beaten his previous best 119 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston last month. Sussex have only made six higher totals than this.
Sussex 569-3 (152.1)
Hundred for Hopkinson and for the second time in his career he gets there with a six over extra cover off Banks. He did the same at Arundel last year when he got his maiden ton. That's his third in first-class but he also got one against the Aussies. De Bruyn now trundling but Goodwin has already biffed him for two boundaries in this over and he is on 223. Hopkinson 108 and the stand is now worth 261 in 59 overs.
Sussex 542-3 (135.3)
Runs have piled up since lunch and Goodwin's 25th boundary, hit through wide mid on off Banks, brought him his seventh double ton for Sussex. He is now on 219 and Hopkinson is 92. All so easy and great to see for the big contingent of Sussex fans here. The stand has long since eclipsed the Sussex fourth wicket record against Somerset. That was set back in 1899 by CB Fry and Percy Latham (195). Expect there will be a few more records before the innings closes.
Sussex 498-3 (130)
Morning session could not have gone any better with 172 runs scored in 33 overs. Goodwin's gone from 96 to 188 and Hopkinson 7 to 78.
Sussex 490-3 (128)
Goodwin 185, Hopkinson 75. Thomas and Banks, who has come on for Waller, have stemmed the run flow a bit but Sussex have still scored 164 in 31 overs this morning. Waller's last went for 19 including two Goodwin sixes down the ground. Wonder when Sussex will declare? A happy hour of Dwayne Smith after lunch would be fun.
Sussex 445-3 (120)
When did two Sussex batsmen both get 150 in the same innings asks the chalker Mike Charman? Let me know if you know. Goodwin's just been dropped again by the unfortunate Waller - on drive which went straight through his hands above his head. His 150 has come from 207 balls with 22 fours. Hoppo's been no slouch either. He hit three successive boundaries off Trego in the last over and he's now given way to Thomas at the Old Pavilion end. Hopkinson 66, Goodwin 152.
Sussex 415-3 (115)
88 runs in the first hour including 15 fours but both batsmen have just had reprieves with Hopkinson dropped on 42 by Waller and Goodwin, on 144, by Trego. Both difficult return catches spilled. Somerset looking a bit ragged and these two are cashing in. Stand now worth 105 in 21 overs. Goodwin 145, Hopkinson 45.
Sussex 380-3 (108)
Goodwin 125 and Hopkinson 28 and this pair have added 54 runs in 40 minutes this morning. The Somerset seam bowling has been very poor. Trego into the attack but he's making little headway and Goodwin is playing with all the class we've come to associate him with. One straight drive off Thomas a while back which raced past the bowler for four was the best shot so far in this match. Spoke to the vampires before the start and umpire "who boasts" reckons it's the slowest pitch he's seen this season. Could be hard for Sussex to winkle 'em out but scoreboard pressure can do funny things to teams.
Sussex 346-3 (99.1)
13 balls and we've already had five boundaries with Hopkinson hitting three in a row in the second over from Willoughby: two cover drives and a pull. Goodwin has just rocked back to hammer Thomas through backward point for another boundary. He is 104 and Goodwin 19. And the scoreboard's working (although the overs are wrong).
Sussex 327-3 (97.2)
Good morning everyone and welcome to Taunton for day two of Sussex's Championship game against Sussex.
We have had some overnight rain here but the sun is just poking through the clouds now and we will start on time. Sussex are resuming on 323-3 with Murray Goodwin on 96 and Carl Hopkinson 7.
Neither electronic scoreboard is working and the PA guy is having trouble with his microphone so we could have some fun and games this morning. He's already called umpire Richard Kettlebrough Neil Mellington...
The leggie Max Waller is about to open up at the River End to Goodwin... and he's clipped his secod ball - a full toss - to the mid-wicket boundary to bring up his first hundred of the season. Well played Muz.
