Thankfully, Mary Mears has resisted Michael Benson’s calls to abandon the A259 bus lanes which have proved so useful, boosting reliability and bus usage.
If the bus lanes themselves were removed, he would clearly see that it was changes to the junctions, not the bus lanes themselves, which have greatly increased congestion – turning people against what should have been a showcase proposal.
Ideally, the road should have been widened, as originally envisaged. But as cars can overtake buses at the busiest bus stops and buses only stop for a few seconds at the remaining few bus stops, this is not really sufficient reason to justify undermining bus services again.
Safety could be greatly improved by clear directional signs and an overtaking ban through the critical section.
