With regards to the £400,000 rehash crossroad at Downs Hotel, Woodingdean, the problem at the crossroads is entirely due to the volume of traffic now mostly all day.
The traffic has increased during the years as a result of the siting of two universities – Stanmer and Falmer – and more recently by vehicles using Woodingdean as a rat run to avoid the continuous traffic jam in Lewes Road.
A few hundred pounds spent on re-phasing the traffic signals at the Downs Hotel would eliminate most accidents. At the moment, Warren Road/Warren Way is still crossing the junction when northbound Falmer Road traffic is moving towards the junction.
Some southbound drivers see this movement but don’t read the red light immediately adjacent to them and move off straight into the path of crossing traffic.
All signals should come red before the next sequence starts – how difficult would this be? It would not help traffic flow very much but it may cut further delays caused by accidents.
Woodingdean needs a bypass – it had one – The Drove, until several years ago when some people saw what could happen and had it re-classified as a bridleway. The £400,000 would go part way to building a bypass.
