The Pepperpot in Queen’s Park, Brighton, stands 60ft high on a hill and is a well-loved local landmark.
It was deigned by Sir Charles Barry and was connected to the elegant Attree Villa, which was sadly demolished in the 1970s.
According to the Story Of Queen’s Park (Brighton Town Press, £9.99), it was probably built to house a horizontal wind wheel for supplying water to the villa, and possibly other properties, but soon became obsolete.
Businessman George Duddell later used it to print his paper, the Brighton Mail. Other uses included a wartime observation point, a meeting place for youth groups, an artist’s studio and public toilets.
It is, sadly, now empty.
