Foodies bored with traditional nights out are enjoying a new kind of eating experience at an underground dining club.

"Loco" is Brighton and Hove's newest restaurant with a difference.

It opens sporadically, the location changes from evening to evening and attendance is by invite only.

Friends Lee Smith, 29, and Chris Cooke, 37, have transformed a living room in a Regency seafront townhouse into the exclusive dining club.

Mr Smith, a DJ and music journalist, said: "The basic idea is to serve top-end, restaurant quality food in a variety of interesting, unusual and unannounced locations, at a fraction of the cost of a conventional restaurant.

"We realised that by combining my years of experience promoting underground club nights, and Chris's experience as a designer and former chef, we could put together what is, as far as Brighton is concerned, a pretty unique event."

It was inspired by similar "guerilla" restaurants in Tokyo, Amsterdam and London.

The first event was held at a secret location for 14 people, who were asked for donations to help fund the eight-course menu.

Invitations were issued on a strict "who you know" basis ensuring the exclusivity of the event.

Like a conventional restaurant waiting staff, a maitre d' and sommelier were all on hand to help the night run smoothly.

And the two friends hope to take their food across the city to mystery dining rooms which could include disused factories and churches.

Mr Cooke, a former chef turned graphic designer, said: "It's about adding to the theatre of the evening. We want people to have a different dining experience.

"We just want to cook really good food for people."

At future meals the duo hope to add to the experience by providing live music and entertainment.
