What a blessing for us poor council taxpayers. The money generated [by party conferences] goes mainly to the hoteliers and restaurateurs and taxi drivers. Ever since the Brighton Bomb it was obvious that we could no longer host the party in power without inconveniencing all other people, visitors and residents alike.
As a shopkeeper in The Lanes, our takings would go down at such times. I find the attitude of the fully armed police offensive particularly at the Clock Tower where they display themselves and their weaponry as if they were an occupying power. I am glad this year will be the last for some time. The party in power may make us well known but not for the right reasons. Brighton has now become infamous.
