Woke up this morning, thinking, 'What shall I do today?' Checked out Eurosport, as I tend to every morning if it's after 7.30 - why are there non-24-hour channels in this day and age? - and found WTA tennis (I'm so pleased Kim Clysters is back and doing well) FOLLOWED BY THE FIRST DAY OF THE WORLD ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Now there's a stroke of luck. I love watching athletics. I love watching almost any proper sport. By this I mean those where you have to train your body for a certain level of fitness, and not those 'games' where all you have to do is practice the actual techniques you use during play. Athletics, tennis, BADMINTON (I wish I'd made that my career) and - YES - synchronised swimming are sports. Darts, snooker, golf - those are games. You can tell the difference because absolutely nothing happens ever and 80-year-olds can compete with teenagers. Games require skill, but no stamina.

So, there I was, all excited, offering to make my other half anything he liked and bring it to him in the bedroom so I could sprawl all over the living room watching athletics (he won't watch sport, whether it's six packs or paunches on display). It was a thrilling start. Jessica Ennis wiping the floor with everyone. Sprint and shotput heats (why do shotputters feel the need to wear lycra trouseringment, there's not a lot of chafing that can occur and they could at least wear something on top), triple jumping, steeplechases.

And then the 20km race walk for men came on. And they walk much MUCH faster than I run. I mean, it's just rude and unnecessary. It's showing off. Sub-4-minutes a kilometre? So I might run tomorrow, but I'm not going out in public today. I shall shoot stuff on the Wii this afternoon, which is at least more active than doing the same thing on another console. But that's it. Ciao.
