Having witnessed yet another near miss on the A259 between Rottingdean and Saltdean, I think it’s time to remind city council leader Mary Mears of her commitment to all of us.
Mrs Mears said in this paper that if the road conditions didn’t improve, she would consider abandoning the bus lane and restoring the road to how it was before.
Well Mrs Mears, now is the time. I know Roger French, who runs the buses, likes the scheme because it allows him to keep his buses on time but for everyone else the price is far too high.
During the rush hour, the delays are a real misery, much worse than before. At any time of day, the confusing, -narrow lanes winding up and down the hills make it very dangerous. If anything, it has got worse now that drivers have got used to it. The speeds have picked up and drivers overtake stationary buses, using any small gap in the oncoming traffic.
Nor is it safe for Mr French’s passengers. Where there is no crossing we have all seen frightened people standing in the middle of the road between lanes of fast-moving traffic, trying to get across to the bus stop.
To add to the misery, more and more drivers are taking to the back streets, turning quiet residential roads into busy rat runs.
So Mrs Mears, now is the time. The designers have had plenty of time to get it right but the whole concept is so fundamentally flawed that it is never going to work satisfactorily. Please quickly restore this road to what it once was, with a wide safety zone in the middle, before somebody pays with their life for this folly.
