This cute cocker spaniel looks just like any other happy-go-lucky puppy.
But in fact ten-week-old Louie was born with a rare bone defect, effectively meaning he walks around on his wrists, putting his bones under immense strain.
He needs a £4,000 operation or he may have to be put down.
His owners Claire and Martin Andrews, of Eley Drive, Rottingdean, say they are desperate to save their puppy, who will be unable to walk at all as soon as he get heavier.
Mr Andrews, 45, said: “He was one of a litter of seven. We stayed up with Louie night after night hand feeding him in an attempt to give him the milk he needed.
“But perhaps the lack of calcium at an early stage had an effect on his bones and his front two legs are deformed so that he is essentially walking on the back of his wrists - as he gets heavier he will be unable to walk at all.
“We are desperate to raise the money for the specialist surgery needed to straighten his legs.
“Obviously we have become extremely close to Louie and would like to raise the money ourselves but if there is someone who has the ability to help, and they are a suitable owner, they could keep Louie.”
Mrs Andrews added: “We have sought the advice of specialist vet Peter Haggis from Wilbury Vets in Hove.
“Mr Haggis says that as Louie gains weight the skin and bone on this leg would become damaged and that he doesn't feel that the other leg would be strong enough to support Louie if the severely affected leg was removed.
“Therefore it is his recommendation that Louie is put to sleep if the surgery isn't an option.
“Obviously as Louie is otherwise fit and well we want this to be a last resort.
“It is horrible that we live in a world that puts money before life.”
Mr Haggis has been treating Louie and described the operation as his only chance.
He said: “Without surgery, to have Louie put down is a decision his owners may well be forced into.”
The couple are now appealing for donations or for interest in a fund-raising barbecue and dog walk.
