The western end of Hove beach is shown in this postcard of 1954 and, at first sight, it looks much the same as today.
But a closer inspection reveals sea protection measures, including a wall along part of the beach, have been built since then.
The promenaders are mostly wearing smart clothes, rather then casual beach wear.
Shoreham Harbour can just be seen at the back of the photograph with its gasworks and two electricity power stations, Brighton A and B, in full working order. They have all since been demolished and there is now just one modern power station in the port.
