I read Janet Vacher would like a memorial erected to her grandfather, Fireman Frederick Mace (The Argus, July 31).
He was killed when his fire appliance blew over while he was fighting the fire that destroyed Seaford’s Empire Cinema in 1939.
Joan Astell, a founder of Seaford Museum, frequently mentioned the sad death of Fireman Mace in her lectures and books on local history.
Seaford has often honoured local heroes, like Claude Raymond VC, in street names. In addition to a plaque in Sutton Road where the fire occurred, what about a road named after Fred Mace?
It could be in one of the town’s new developments. A road with Mr Mace’s name would be more appropriate than a developer’s choice with no Seaford connection.
