Two men hurled packages of drugs and mobile phones into the grounds of a prison.

Mark Maynard, 22, and Zachary McDowell, 20, were seen by a jailer throwing the parcels - made from socks and black tape - over Lewes Prison wall.

The pair, who were found guilty of attempting to supply cocaine and cannabis to inmates after a trial, now face more than six years behind bars themselves.

Maynard's girlfriend, Makayla Luxford, 23, who is pregnant with his child, was cleared of the charges.

Lewes Crown Court was told that Maynard, of Alton Close, Crawley, and McDowell, of Southgate Drive, Crawley, were seen running away from the prison in Brighton Road at about 11.30pm of December 30 last year.

Miss Luxford, who was found parked in a cul-de-sac close to the prison, was arrested by police.

McDowell, who was sitting in the passenger seat of her VW Golf, was also arrested and Maynard was detained later.

The court was told that Maynard had only been released from Lewes jail six days earlier.

Maynard and McDowell's fingerprints were found on the packages.

During the trial Richard Barton, prosecuting, told the jury the jail, like many others, has problems with inmates obtaining items they should not have from outside the prison.

He said: "We are not talking like the old days with files hidden in cakes to cut through bars, the things people want these days are illegal drugs and mobile phones."

Both men broke down crying as they were sentenced. Maynard kissed Luxford before she left the dock after being cleared by the jury.

Judge Charles Kemp sentenced Maynard, who has 23 previous convictions, including offences of dishonesty and burglary, to four years in jail.

McDowell was given a two-and-a-half year sentence in a young offenders institution.

The judge told them: "Supplying class A drugs is always serious, and more so supplying it to inmates.

"The prison authorities for a difficult enough job these days without their inmates being provided with class A drugs from outside."
